Regulations of the Art Competition “The Sea is my Land, Artists from the Mediterranean”

Tax code, VAT number and registration number in the Rome Companies Register: No. 09339391006 (Hereafter the Promoting Company).
On the occasion of the exhibition “The Sea is my Land, Artists from the Mediterranean” , curated by Francesco Bonami and Emanuela Mazzonis and organised for BNL’s centenary, from 12 February 2013 to 17 March 2013, the Promoting Company shall hold a competition aimed at emerging artists. At the end of the selection process, the winning work shall be displayed in the exhibition and included in the official catalogue.
Each artist shall have the opportunity to present his or her own photography or video work (hereafter defined as the “Work(s)”).
Participation in this competition is free of charge.
The activity is excluded from the regulations on prize-giving events, as stipulated by Presidential Decree 430/2011.
3. Theme of the competition
The Work so executed shall relate to the theme of the exhibition to be organised on the occasion of the centenary of BNL.
The title of the exhibition is The Sea is my Land, Artists from the Mediterranean.
Registrations for the competition may be submitted between 12 February 2013 and 17 March 2013, the closing date of the competition.
5. Participation requirements
The competition is aimed at artists aged under 40, who have reached the age of 18.
Artists must have been born or work in the following 22 countries bordering the Mediterranean: Spain, France, Principality of Monaco, Italy, Malta, Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Montenegro, Albania, Greece, Cyprus, Turkey, Syria, Lebanon, Israel, Palestine, Egypt, Libya, Tunisia, Algeria, Morocco.
The artist may submit a newly or previously executed Work.
6. Enrolment in the competition
Artists may participate in this competition during the period from 12 February 2013 to 17 March 2013.
Participants (hereafter, the “Author” and in the plural, “Authors”) must register by visiting the web page TheSeaismyLand.bnl.it and completing all of the fields in the registration form.
Data requested for participation are as follows:
- First name, surname, e-mail address and telephone
- Title of the Work with complete credits
- Brief biography
- Document in Word or pdf form, explaining the link between the submitted project and the theme of the competition. Artists not born in one of the 22 countries listed above shall also be obliged to indicate the type of link with one of the Countries bordering the Mediterranean.
- Copy of a valid identity document (tiff, jpg or pdf format)
At the end of the registration phase indicated above, the Author may upload his/her Work.
An essential condition for participation in the competition is prior agreement to processing of data and the full acceptance of the terms and conditions for participation in this competition.
7. Rights of use of material received
By taking part in the competition, artists grant the non-exclusive right of publication of the Works to the Promoting Company free of charge, with authorisation for the use (photographic material, videos) without demanding any claim to same by way of copyright. The Promoting Company reserves the right to publish material submitted to the competition, both in its own publications and in editorial and website initiatives specifically linked to the competition.
8. Technical requirements of the Work
Works may be uploaded as photographs or videos.
The characteristics requested for uploading are as follows:
Digital, traditional or lightbox photographs, uploaded in the following formats, shall be accepted:
- Single images in tiff or jpg format
- .zip files containing at most 10 images in tiff or jpg format, 1,500 pixels per side and 300 dpi (maximum size 70 MegaBytes).
For the purposes of the Exhibition, the dimensions of the photographic Works may vary within the maximum permitted dimensions of 2 metres x 2 metres.
The links from which the video may be downloaded shall be included.
Each Author may submit at most one Work.
10. Jury evaluation criteria
The criteria on the basis of which BNL shall choose the winning Entry shall be as follows:
- Relevance to the theme of the exhibition “The Sea is my Land, Artists from the Mediterranean”;
- Quality and artistic research of the Work;
- Originality and creativity.
11. Conditions of exclusion
The following shall not be accepted for the exhibition:
- Any individuals who submit the requested documentation after the stipulated deadline;
Employees, staff, family members and relatives (to the second degree inclusive) of members of the jury and of the BNL Group;
Any individuals who do not meet the stipulated requirements for participation;
Works considered unsuitable or non-compliant with the regulations.
12. Award of the Prize
Works accepted to the competition shall initially be evaluated by the Curators of the exhibition “The Sea is my Land, Artists from the Mediterranean”, Francesco Bonami and Emanuela Mazzonis. At the end of the evaluation process, the Curator shall select 10 finalists to be submitted to the judgement of the employees of BNL, who shall have the opportunity to vote for their favourite work.
The Promoting Company shall provide its own employees with an internal channel, through which these employees shall be able to express their votes between 3 and 10 April 2013.
Every BNL user shall be able to cast at most 1 vote per Work.
The award of the prize shall take place by 12 April 2013.
The decision of the Curator and of the employees of BNL can not be challenged and shall be final.
The winning Work shall be shown at the “The Sea is my Land, Artists from the Mediterranean” exhibition organised for the centenary of BNL. The Work shall be published in the exhibition Catalogue.
For the purposes of participating in the Exhibition, the artist shall be asked to submit the winning Work. BNL shall be responsible for contacting the artist via e-mail or post, in order to provide the instructions necessary for submitting the Work and for providing the loan contract.
BNL shall be responsible for the insurance and transport of the Work for the entire duration of the event.
14. Publication of the Work in the Exhibition Catalogue
For the purpose of publication in the Catalogue, if the artist has not already done so at the time of registration, he/she shall be asked to submit an image of the Work on a cd in jpg 300 dpi format, with dimensions of the smaller side of at least 24 cm or 2835 pixel and maximum size of 7 MegaByte.
15. Notification to the winner
The winner of the prize shall be notified of victory by telephone and/or e-mail within 10 working days of the award at the address provided during the registration phase for the competition.
16. Processing of personal data
The Promoting Company hereby declares that participation in this competition presupposes the processing of the personal data of the participants in accordance with Legislative Decree No. 196 of 30/06/2003, “Code for the protection of personal data” and subsequent amendments. Pursuant to Art. 13 of Legislative Decree 196/2003, it points out that the personal data of the participants in this competition shall be processed for the purposes of executing all of the phases of the competition. Processing shall be carried out by means of instruments suitable for guaranteeing security and confidentiality, including via automated systems. Data shall be processed by the Promoting Company and by We Are Social Srl, as the company appointed as operational manager of the competition.
Each participant may exercise all of the rights described in Art. 7 of Legislative Decree 196/03 at any time, e.g. requesting a modification or cancellation of his/her own data by registered letter with notice of receipt, sent to the headquarters of the Promoting Company at the address indicated in Art. 1.
17. Liability of the author
By submitting a Work, the Author assumes all associated liability, declaring that he/she has carefully inspected and accepted all of the terms and conditions of the competition. In particular, he/she declares and guarantees that he/she is the author and holder of all author’s rights for the uploaded Work and that the same is the fruit of his/her original creation and is not a copy or reproduction of a work by third parties;
He/she declares and guarantees that he/she has obtained all permissions and disclaimers for the use and dissemination of content from all persons depicted in the photographs or video and that hence, neither the photographs nor the video shots shall entail the infringement of rights of third parties;
He/she declares and guarantees that he/she is aware that he/she is liable for the content of the Work and hence holds harmless the Promoting Company from any injurious consequence or request for compensation, including legal expenses, relating to failure to observe the uploading conditions; the Promoting Company shall thus in no case be held liable for any claims for compensation brought by third parties;
The consistency and truthfulness of the data and information provided on registration are essential conditions for participation. Their infringement may entail the annulment of the victory or debarment from participation.
18. Compliance and guarantees
Participation in the competition shall entail the full and unconditional awareness, adhesion and acceptance of all of the articles in these regulations.
The Promoting Company hereby reserves the right to request additions to the material received (submission of photographs, videos or any material which facilitates the understanding of its artistic merits) whenever it considers these necessary for the evaluation of the submitted Work.
Any challenges shall be governed by these terms and conditions. For any dispute or aspect not expressly specified, Italian law shall be applicable, with the courts of Rome having jurisdiction.
